Description

This workshop is a 4-hour introduction to the universal and ancient art of carving a utensil . John will take you through the basic tools and equipment, the safety issues relating to handling edged tools and then guide you through the process as you carve your own masterpiece.

Each participant will have the use of two specialist carving knives, a lap-board for assisting with the carving process and will have examples of finished spoons to refer to as they progress. There will be a range of basic ‘blanks’ for the participants to choose their desired spoon shape/style.

As part of the process John will also talk about a few associated topics including the nature and characteristics of wood for carving, appropriate timbers to use, spoon design, historic and cultural variations and ideas, and how to care for your finished product.

The workshop is essentially practical in nature and, after the initial introduction and safety discussion, most of the talking and guidance will take place while participants work.

Due to the nature of the course and the tools in use participants must be 16 or older.
