Description
The main body of the blade is Western Red Cedar which is lighter but less strong. WRC varies significantly in colour from very light to deep red, both from plank to plank and within each plank.
The darker hardwood edge armour are generally made from Walnut or mahogany.
The lighter hardwood edge armour are generally made from Ash, cherry or Popular/Tulipwood
In all case the timber is chosen from our available stock to have an appealing appearance.
The blade length is determined by subtracting the loom length from the over-all length and dividing by two. . . . the longer the loom the less blade you have to work with!
We are no longer making the ‘Western Wide’ version of this paddle. Making a paddle of wider dimensions than our medium version negates many of the benefits of using a Greenland paddle.

Having use a Valkyrie Greenland paddle for a couple of years I have now added a Greenland split to my kit. Excellent paddle, as was the full paddle, and can thoroughly recommend both paddles for quality of finish, function and excellent customised service.

Fantastic workmanship, fits my measurements exactly, great communication from John making sure all measurements were correct for my needs, kept upto date on estimated time of completion and delivery. A beautiful paddle expertly handcrafted and would highly recommend one. The split function works amazingly well, much easier than any carbon fibre paddles I’ve come across. This is my second paddle from John my first being a one piece and are so versatile and so comfortable. My only disappointment is they are made so well and so comfortable that you don’t need to replace it and therefore I can’t support him any further but everyone who tries mine agrees they are amazing. So please purchase one they are well worth the money, a true investment.

After a disastrous days paddle on the Llyn Peninsula and a broken Carbon Greenland paddle the need arose for something new.
As lover of a good hand crafted wooden open canoe paddle, the search for something special to replace my broken paddle ensued. To my delight i discovered Valkyrie and a split Greenland paddle was chosen.
The ordering process was simple with options for build and sizing. I followed the size of my old paddle.
Good communication from John throughout the build process giving estimates of completion date, the paddle was sent Parcelforce 24 and arrived promptly.
New paddle day arrived and upon opening the box I was faced with a choice should I mount this on the wall as a piece of art, or get it out on the water. It’s a thing of beauty even my wife questioned if I should be using it. Of course I opted for the latter and excitedly headed out on the water to try it out.
The first thing I noticed was the weight, while heavier than my old carbon paddle, but not excessively. It has a lovely balance and a feeling of robustness it feels like it will take quite a hammering. The spigot works well and there is absolutely no play in the joint.
All in all a beautiful well built paddle in a range of stunning wood. Top customer service and top class product thanks John

Overall I’m very pleased with this latest paddle. The plastic connection point is made of very solid material, and so far I haven’t noticed any play in the joint during use. The wood is finished very nicely as usual, a couple of notches here and there but usually due to the grain and not from tool use.
My one criticism would be that there is a visible “bowing” when looking down the length of the paddle due to the angle at which the two halves have been attached to the plastic joints. Its not the end of the world, but would need to be accounted for on the water as it would slightly alter the positioning of the blade when in use. Thanks again for all your help, I’ve no doubt these paddles will last many years if looked after.

I’m now the proud owner of a split Greenland paddle from Valkyrie Craft, and I can confidently say it’s been a game changer for my paddling experience. The wooden construction feels far more forgiving than a carbon lay-up, with noticeably less flutter and a greater sense of grip and control. For me, it easily justifies the slight increase in weight.
The split design adds a layer of convenience, though I will note one small quirk. This isn’t a fault of Valkyrie, but separating the halves when wet can be a bit tricky. It comes down to the design of the spigot, which is a commercial one: the snug fit is excellent for preventing play, but without relief channels, a slight vacuum can form when pulling the sections apart. It’s a bit like covering the end of a syringe and trying to draw the plunger. Straightforward when dry, but when wet the thin layer of water creates a gasket effect, and of course, paddles have a habit of getting wet.
That, however, won’t stop me buying another split paddle from Valkyrie Craft; the craftsmanship is impeccable and the aesthetics are stunning…I need a medium width one next!
