Description
This is a two day course aimed at providing tuition and support in the carving of a wooden paddle.
The two days focus on making a Greenland paddle.
At the beginning of the course participants are provided with a paddle blank and at the close they take away their finely fashioned paddle. The aim is, of course, to leave with a finished piece but this is dependent on the participants progress over the two days. To date no participant has left without a finished paddle.

I attended John’s Greenland Paddle Making Workshop recently and I can wholeheartedly recommend attending one of John’s workshops.
Prior to the workshop John’s attention to detail, preparation and communication were excellent. He made sure that everything that could be done to make the workshop a success was looked after. Even though the workshop was held off site, it did not feel like it suffered in any way. The space was very well adapted. John had transported and set up work benches, tools and, most importantly, beautifully prepared blanks for the paddles.
His method of instruction felt really well suited to the task at hand and he guided us through the process step by step with just the right balance of instruction, advice and time and space to work with the wood. His knowledge and passion for the materials, methods and tools is inspiring.
As promised, we all came away with a beautiful Greenland paddle. But perhaps more importantly for me, I feel that I came away from the workshop with a deeper understanding of the process of working with wood and an appreciation of what can be gained from working with direction from a master craftsperson and cooperatively with other like minded participants. It was also a whole lot of fun!
John’s aftercare has been excellent and has continued to help me understand the wood and how to care for my beautiful paddle. If you are considering doing one of John’s workshops, book it…your future self will thank you.
